Privacy Policy
WardTalk lets you practise OET Speaking role-plays with an AI patient. This page says what that involves for your data, in the order it actually happens.
What we collect
Your recordings. When you hold the microphone and speak, the audio is uploaded to our server. There is no other way for the app to work: nothing is assessed on the device.
What you said, as text. Every recording is transcribed, with the timing of each word.
Your scores. The criterion scores, the moments the feedback calls out, and the estimated band for each session.
An account identifier. On first launch we create an anonymous account for your device. You are not asked for a name, an email address or a phone number, and the app works without any of them.
If you sign in with Apple: the identifier Apple gives us, and the email address Apple chooses to share — which may be a private relay address. We never see your Apple password.
Purchases. Whether you have an active subscription, and which plan. Payment is handled by Apple; we never see your card details, and neither does our payment provider.
We do not collect your location, your contacts, your health records, or any advertising identifier. The patient you practise with is fictional, and nothing you say to them is treated as medical information about you.
What we do with it
Your recording is sent to OpenAI to be transcribed, and the patient’s replies are generated and spoken by OpenAI. That is what the product is. OpenAI processes this on our behalf; we do not use your recordings to train any model, and we do not permit anyone else to.
Your transcripts and measurements are used to produce your feedback, and to look at whether our scoring agrees with a human’s. Where we do that, we use our own recordings and those of volunteers who agreed to it — never yours without asking.
We do not sell your data, and we do not share it for advertising.
How long we keep it
- Recordings
- 30 days, then they are deleted. Long enough to play back a moment in your feedback, short enough that we are not sitting on a library of people’s voices.
- Transcripts and scores
- Until you delete your account. They are what your history and your progress are made of.
- Account records
- Until you delete your account, and for a short period afterwards while the deletion is carried out.
Deleting everything
Profile → Delete account. It removes every session, recording, transcript and score we hold for you. There is a short grace period during which you can cancel it, and after that it cannot be undone.
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Only you can do that, in your Apple account settings — we have no way to.
Your rights
You can ask for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. The app does the last one; for the others, write to hello@wardtalk.com and we will answer.
If you are in the EU or the UK, our basis for processing is the contract between us — we cannot give you feedback on your speaking without processing your speaking.
Children
WardTalk is for people preparing for a professional English exam and is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect anything from them.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that affects what happens to your data, we will say so in the app before it takes effect.
WardTalk is not affiliated with OET, CBLA or Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment. Band estimates are produced from the publicly published OET criteria and are not official scores.
